Mubende District was struck by tragedy when three worshippers lost their lives, and seven others were seriously injured under the ancient Nakayima tree, a revered cultural and historical site. The incident occurred in the early hours of December 4, 2024, during preparations for an annual Thanksgiving and worship ceremony.
Police spokesperson for the Wamala Region, Kawala Racheal, reported that a dry branch from the Nakayima tree fell, striking the victims. Among the deceased were Annet Nakabuye, 45, and Evelyn Twebaze, 39, while one victim remains unidentified. Two of the injured are minors, all of whom were transported to Mubende Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
The victims had travelled from across Uganda to participate in the December 5 celebrations at the Nakayima tree, which is believed to be over 650 years old. Worshippers gather annually at the site, which is deeply intertwined with local traditions and folklore, seeking blessings and honoring ancestral spirits.
The tree also referred to as the Nakayima Shrine, holds spiritual significance for many, yet the fatal accident has sparked renewed discussions about safety measures for attendees. Authorities have launched an investigation, aiming to determine whether the age and condition of the tree pose ongoing risks to visitors.
This incident not only highlights the fragility of cultural heritage sites but also raises the importance of balancing spiritual practices with safety precautions to prevent such tragedies in the future.
