Christmas Unlocked: Gov’t Announces Reopening Dates For Karuma Bridge Amid Final Touches

By Kato Jamil

The long-awaited reopening of Karuma Bridge, a critical link for northern Uganda, has been officially set for December 20. This milestone follows an extensive reconstruction project to revitalise the ageing infrastructure, ensuring safer and more reliable connectivity for travelers across the Acholi, West Nile, and Lango sub-regions.

During a Saturday inspection, State Minister for Works Musa Ecweru praised the engineering efforts and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to meeting the deadline.

“We are restoring confidence for travelers. Those heading to celebrate Christmas can plan to use this route,” he assured.

The bridge, originally constructed in 1963, had deteriorated due to structural defects, including severe corrosion and deck erosion, necessitating the Shs11 billion overhaul. Works include replacing the concrete deck, reinforcing the structure with modern materials, and other vital repairs.

Deputy Resident Engineer Charles Bongomin from the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) highlighted that the project is 85% complete, with finishing touches expected to proceed even as the bridge reopens to general traffic.

While all vehicles, including buses, will be allowed, trailers are advised to await full completion. Karuma Bridge remains a lifeline for northern Uganda, enhancing trade and connectivity as it links communities and markets across the region.
