The late Muhammad Ssegirinya, Kawempe North Member of Parliament, who passed away at 36 after a prolonged battle with ‘unknown illness’, is being remembered as a devoted leader whose final requests reflect his unwavering commitment to his people, community, and political ideals. Ssegirinya succumbed on Thursday at Lubaga Hospital, following extensive treatment locally and abroad.
Ssegirinya’s final wishes offer a glimpse into his enduring bond with the people he served and his deep ties to his political and spiritual communities. Among his heartfelt requests was a week-long mourning period, symbolizing his dedication to the constituency and causes he championed.
In a striking show of allegiance to his political roots, Ssegirinya wished to spend a night at the National Unity Platform (NUP) headquarters. The request highlights his strong connection to the party that shaped his political journey. He also asked that NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine, deliver a five-hour tribute in his honour.
Speaking at a vigil at the NUP headquarters, Bobi Wine pledged to honour this unique request. “Ssegirinya wanted me to speak for five hours. I will fulfill this by speaking for one hour at each of the five mourning ceremonies,” he announced, underscoring the bond they shared.
Ssegirinya’s wishes also reflected his spiritual devotion and connection to his constituents. He requested prayers at Mbogo Mosque, a spiritual cornerstone in his constituency, and a remembrance night at his home in Kasangati. These wishes speak to his life as a servant leader deeply rooted in his faith and community.
The late MP’s journey of remembrance will conclude on Sunday with his burial at his ancestral home in Kadugala-Butale, Masaka. Family, friends, and supporters have come together to ensure that every detail of his requests is fulfilled, honouring a leader who lived for his people and left an indelible mark on those who knew him.
