In recent developments, Volunteer Uganda Extra Limited (VUEL), a community-based organization committed to fighting corruption and promoting transparency in Uganda, has taken significant steps to demand accountability from public offices. VUEL recently addressed a formal letter to the Lwengo’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Lujumwa Nathan and Community Development Officer (CDO) Mr Mazinga Joseph, citing concerns over a lack of response to prior information requests.
The Pursuit of Transparency
The organization has cited Article 41(1) of the Constitution of Uganda and Section 37 of the Access to Information Act, 2005, as the basis for their efforts. These legal provisions guarantee the right to access information held by public offices, ensuring that public officials act in the best interest of the citizens they serve. Despite submitting a request on August 12, 2024, under Ref. No. VUEL/GEN/2024, the organization has yet to receive the requested documents or a formal response.

Volunteer Uganda Extra Limited has emphasized that failure to provide the requested information could lead to legal proceedings. However, the organization has opted to uphold decorum, allowing seven additional days for the responsible offices to respond.
Financial Documentation
Included in their correspondence is a cash deposit slip from Finance Trust Bank, Lwengo Branch, confirming payment for access to information services. This payment underscores the organization’s commitment to lawful and transparent processes.
Volunteer Uganda Extra Limited’s efforts highlight the importance of holding public offices accountable. By leveraging legal frameworks, they aim to ensure that public funds and resources are managed transparently.
