NUP Card: Ssegirinya’s Aide Luwemba Nominated For Kawempe North Battle

By Frank Kamuntu

The race for the vacant Kawempe North MP seat left by the late Muhammad Ssegirinya is taking shape with the nomination of his longtime aide, Muhammad Luwemba, who is now officially entering the contest.

The late Ssegirinya, who passed away on January 9, 2025, after battling brain failure and multiple organ collapse, is remembered for his unwavering dedication to his constituents.

Ssegirinya’s family had strongly backed Luwemba as the best candidate to continue the late MP’s work. According to Ssegirinya’s mother, Justine Ssanyu Nakajumba, the family believes that Luwemba, being the closest person to their son, understands the issues that matter most to the people of Kawempe North.

Nakajumba emphasized that the family is confident Luwemba will carry forward Ssegirinya’s advocacy and vision for the constituency.

“I believe my son’s legacy must continue, and Muhammad will ensure that the needs of the people are met,” said Nakajumba in a statement last month.

Luwemba is not alone in seeking the NUP ticket for the upcoming by-election. The party has confirmed eight contenders, with lawyer Elias Nalukola Luyimbazi also in the running.

As the contest intensifies, the NUP Election Management Committee is expected to announce the official flag bearer on February 5, ahead of the highly anticipated election set for March 13.

Others are; Moses Ali Jjemba, Mathias Mulumba, Onemus Mutumba, Tom Fisher Kasenge, and Juliet Namale. Additionally, there are NUP candidates Umar Magala, Muhamood Mutazindwa, and Kulya Soul Zziwa.
