“We’re Not Same Old Idiots You Dealt With 50yrs Ago” – Kagame Blasts Belgium As He Suspends Aid Ties

By Frank Kamuntu

Rwanda suspended all development cooperation with Belgium amid rising tensions. President Paul Kagame delivered the stern message during a public address yesterday.

According to government sources, the suspension affects EUR 95 million in development aid. The funds targeted healthcare systems and public financial management through 2029.

Belgian authorities faced strong criticism over their stance on regional conflicts. “We are not the same old idiots you dealt with 50 years ago,” President Kagame declared.

Rwanda rejected accusations of supporting M23 rebels in eastern DRC. Belgium responded by pushing restrictions on Rwanda’s access to international development financing.

The partnership between both nations spans six decades of cooperation. Belgian support covered health, agriculture, education, and social protection sectors since 1962.

Rwanda’s government challenged Belgium’s recent position through official channels. “Belgium has chosen a side in this conflict, which is its right, but politicizing development aid is plainly wrong,” stated Rwanda’s official communication.

Security concerns dominate the ongoing diplomatic row between both nations. Rwanda highlighted persistent threats from FDLR militia groups linked to the 1994 genocide.

Belgian development agency Enabel managed the bilateral cooperation programs. Five-year agreements structured the development partnership framework.

Additional funding worth EUR 17.6 million supported regional initiatives. These programs benefited Rwanda, Uganda, and DRC’s social protection schemes.

Rwanda explores alternative partnerships with emerging global powers. China, Russia, and Gulf nations present new cooperation opportunities.

The government maintains firm positions on regional security matters. Officials emphasize the need for addressing FDLR threats.

Diplomatic relations face uncertainty following the suspension announcement. Rwanda’s leadership advocates for respect of sovereign decisions.

The suspension signals shifts in historical partnership dynamics. Both nations navigate challenges in their long-standing relationship.

Belgian authorities await formal communication about future engagements. Rwanda strengthens its stance against external pressure on regional matters.
