A tragic and alarming incident occurred this Wednesday morning near Uganda’s Parliament, as a young man, Benjamin Agaba, set himself on fire in an apparent act of protest.

Agaba, reportedly feeling desperate, doused himself in a flammable liquid before igniting the flames near the entrance of Parliament. Witnesses immediately rushed to help, and security personnel swiftly extinguished the flames, preventing Agaba from suffering fatal injuries. He was quickly taken to a hospital for treatment, though the severity of his injuries remains unclear.

According to Agaba’s statements prior to the incident, he felt abandoned by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

He claimed that his property had been vandalized by supporters of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), and despite his repeated requests for assistance over the past year, he alleged that the NRM had failed to offer any support.

Agaba further accused the ruling party of neglecting his family, stating that his father had been left homeless due to their political affiliation.

This desperate act of self-immolation has sparked deep concern and reflection on the growing political tensions in Uganda. While authorities have yet to comment officially, the incident has prompted discussions about the emotional and psychological impact of political exclusion, particularly among Uganda’s youth.
