The Independent Online Journalists Association Uganda (INDOJA-U) has issued a strong condemnation of the police brutality that occurred today in Kawempe, leading to severe injuries of journalist Miracle Ibrah. Ibrah, a journalist for Top TV, sustained significant eye injuries after a tear gas canister was allegedly fired directly at him by police. The incident took place near the Electoral Commission (EC) office in Kawempe during the ongoing by-election nominations.

At the time, Ibrah was covering the nomination of National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, Luyimbazi Nalukoola. Nalukoola, who was the third candidate to be nominated, had just completed his nomination when he proceeded to Mbogo Mosque to meet his supporters, with Ibrah documenting the event. While on assignment, Ibrah was caught in the crossfire of police force, resulting in his eye injuries.

INDOJA-U President Andrew Irumba Katusabe has labeled this attack as yet another troubling violation of press freedom and human rights in Uganda, particularly during the sensitive election period. The association decried the actions of security agencies that target journalists—whose sole duty is to inform the public and report the truth. This type of violence is seen as an abuse of power, undermining democratic principles and the fundamental rights of Ugandan citizens.

“We strongly condemn the actions of the Uganda Police Force and other security agencies involved in this brutal attack,” stated Andrew Irumba, “The role of the police is to protect and serve the public, not to brutalize individuals who are simply exercising their rights, especially journalists who have the right to report freely without fear of violence.”

The association further urged the Electoral Commission to take immediate action to prevent further violence during the electoral process. INDOJA-U emphasized that no journalist should face harm simply for performing their duties. “If these assaults continue unchecked, the very foundation of press freedom in Uganda will be at risk,” Katusabe added.

As Ibrah endures pain from his injuries, INDOJA-U calls for an independent investigation into the incident, along with accountability for the police officers involved. The association also stressed the need for stronger protective measures to safeguard journalists who cover political events.

“Freedom of the press is a fundamental pillar of democracy,” Katusabe concluded. “We will not stand idly by while journalists are subjected to violence for simply doing their jobs. INDOJA-U stands in full solidarity with Ibrah and all journalists who courageously risk their lives to bring the truth to the public.”
