A devastating accident unfolded on February 26, 2025, at the Kibaati trading centre in Mukono District when a cement truck, traveling at high speed, lost control and crashed into a building. The incident, which occurred around 9 a.m. near Kampala Cement, has left the local community in deep shock.

The truck, with registration numbers UBJ 930T and UAW 217A, swerved off the road, colliding with a restaurant and several vegetable stalls before slamming into the building. Tragically, five individuals have been confirmed dead, and there are concerns that more people might be trapped beneath the debris.

Emergency response teams are on-site, working tirelessly to assist the victims. Those injured have been transported to Kawolo Hospital in Lugazi and Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala for medical attention. Authorities are still in the process of determining the full extent of the casualties.

Road accidents in Uganda can be attributed to several factors, many of which are preventable. Some of the main causes include:

  1. Poor Road Conditions: Many roads in Uganda are poorly maintained, with potholes, inadequate signage, and uneven surfaces. These hazards increase the risk of accidents, especially for drivers who may not be familiar with certain routes.
  2. Speeding: Excessive speed is one of the leading causes of accidents in Uganda. Drivers often ignore speed limits or drive too fast for road conditions, making it difficult to react in time to sudden obstacles or changes in the road.
  3. Driver Recklessness: Some drivers engage in reckless behaviors like overtaking in dangerous spots, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or ignoring traffic signals. Such behaviors significantly increase the likelihood of accidents.
  4. Poor Vehicle Maintenance: Many vehicles on Ugandan roads are in poor mechanical condition due to a lack of regular maintenance or the use of old, worn-out vehicles. Faulty brakes, worn-out tires, and malfunctioning lights can lead to accidents.
  5. Lack of Road Safety Education: Many road users, including both drivers and pedestrians, are not adequately educated on road safety rules and traffic regulations. This lack of awareness leads to risky behaviors on the road, such as crossing roads without looking or not using seatbelts.
  6. Pedestrian Risk: Pedestrians often walk on the road or cross streets without paying attention to traffic. In some areas, there are no designated pedestrian walkways, making it difficult for both pedestrians and drivers to navigate safely.
  7. Overloading: Overloading of vehicles, especially trucks and buses, is a common practice in Uganda. This not only makes the vehicles less stable but also reduces their ability to stop or maneuver quickly in case of an emergency.
  8. Weather Conditions: Poor weather conditions, such as heavy rain, fog, or dust storms, can impair visibility and road traction, leading to accidents. Drivers who fail to adjust their driving according to weather conditions contribute to the rise in accidents.
  9. Inadequate Traffic Enforcement: While traffic laws exist in Uganda, enforcement can be inconsistent. This lack of strict law enforcement leads to violations like speeding, driving without a license, or driving without proper insurance.
  10. Distracted Driving: The use of mobile phones while driving has become a major contributor to accidents. Drivers who are distracted by texting or talking on their phones are less attentive to the road, increasing the risk of collisions.
