On International Women’s Day 2025, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni led the national celebrations in Kyankwanzi District. The event, under the theme “Accelerate Action for Gender Equality,” pointed out Uganda’s continued commitment to empowering women and promoting their active participation in national development.

President Museveni took the opportunity to reflect on the women who have shaped his life. In a post on his X account, he acknowledged the influence of three important women: his late mother, Mama Esteri Kokundeka; his wife, Janet Museveni; and their daughters.

He shared, “On this day of celebrating women, I have three women who have been pivotal to my life: my late mother, who toiled with us on her back and cooked using rudimentary methods, like firewood. The second is Mama Janet; unlike my mother, she never carried our children on her back or used firewood to cook. The third is my daughters, who have lived a life very different from my mother’s.”

President Museveni emphasized that while his mother faced tough conditions, his wife and daughters have had a more comfortable and progressive lifestyle.

He stated that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) strives to ensure that every Ugandan woman can live a life similar to Mama Janet’s; one of dignity, comfort, and empowerment, rather than the hardships his mother endured.

The celebration in Kyankwanzi underscored the ongoing efforts to improve the lives of women in Uganda. With a focus on increasing gender equality, the government has made progress in empowering women in various sectors, including education, healthcare, and business.

The theme of the day pointed out the need to accelerate these efforts to ensure women are fully included in the country’s development.
