The community of Wakiso District is mourning the heartbreaking loss of nine-year-old Nanyonga Shanitah, a pupil at Kid’s Nest Nursery and Primary School, who drowned in a water channel near her school.

Shanitah reportedly met her tragic fate while attempting to retrieve a pen she had forgotten at home. According to eyewitnesses, she had arrived at school early in the morning but later decided to return home to pick up the pen. On her way back, she tried to cross a water channel with strong currents. Sadly, she slipped and was swept away by the raging waters.

Onlookers watched in horror as she struggled against the current before disappearing beneath the surface. Despite desperate attempts by community members to rescue her, their efforts were in vain. The police marine unit was called in to search for her body, but as of the time of reporting, it had not yet been recovered.

The incident has sparked outrage among parents and residents, who are questioning the safety of schools located near hazardous areas. Many blame the school administration for failing to implement protective measures to prevent such accidents.

“How can a school operate so close to a dangerous water channel without any safety precautions?” one distressed parent asked.

Shanitah’s sudden and tragic death has left her family, schoolmates, and teachers devastated. The loss has also intensified demands for stricter safety regulations to protect children in schools situated near risky environments.

Arrests & Investigation Underway

In response to the incident, police arrested Kid’s Nest Nursery and Primary School director, Kibirango Esther, and the school’s security guard, Ssentongo Peter. Authorities say the two were taken in to assist with investigations into the circumstances surrounding Shanitah’s death.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine whether negligence played a role in the tragedy.

A Wake-Up Call For School Safety

This heartbreaking incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of children in schools, particularly those in flood-prone areas or near dangerous water bodies. Many are now urging local authorities to take immediate action to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As the community grieves, this devastating loss serves as a painful reminder of the urgent need for better safety measures to protect young learners.
