Liverpool: A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the unexplained death of a woman at the Lord Nelson Hotel in Liverpool city centre. The incident, which saw a significant police presence at the scene, occurred on Hotham Street.
Emergency services were called to the scene where the woman was sadly pronounced dead. Numerous police vehicles were stationed on both Lord Nelson Street and Holtham Street, with Crime Scene Investigation officers in white suits seen entering and exiting the hotel behind a police cordon.
One woman told the ECHO that residents on the top floor of the three-storey building had been instructed to stay indoors. Another resident from the second floor reported being unable to return to his room, unsure of when he would be allowed back in.
Merseyside Police said in a statement: “At around 1.40pm yesterday (Friday 11 April), we received a report that a 58-year-old woman had been found unconscious inside the Lord Nelson Hotel on Hotham Street.
“Emergency services attended the scene, but she was sadly pronounced deceased. An investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident and the cause of her death.
“As part of enquiries, a 52-year-old man from Liverpool has been arrested on suspicion of murder. The man was taken to a police station and will be questioned by detectives.”
Detective Superintendent Paul Grounds said: “These are still the early stages of our investigation and our work will continue at pace at the location and elsewhere, as we look to piece together what happened.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with the victim’s family, who will be supported by specialist officers, and to everyone affected by the events of yesterday.
“A man is in custody, and I would like to take this opportunity to remind people of the importance of not posting speculation or other comments online which could affect our ongoing work.”
