Former President of Kenya, H.E. Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, arrived in Uganda yesterday to deliver the keynote address at the Guild Leaders’ Summit hosted by Makerere University. The event, a significant gathering in the East African youth leadership calendar, attracted student leaders from across the region.
The summit aims to foster dialogue around youth leadership, regional integration, and the role of young people in shaping East Africa’s future. It underscores Makerere University’s longstanding tradition as a breeding ground for the region’s political and intellectual leadership.
Uhuru Kenyatta, who served as Kenya’s fourth president from 2013 to 2022, remains a prominent figure in African diplomacy and peacebuilding efforts. His invitation to speak at the summit reflects his continued relevance in promoting democratic values, regional cooperation, and youth empowerment.
The news of Kenyatta’s visit was first shared by Sarah Kagingo via her official X (formerly Twitter) account. “Honoured to join H.E. the Vice President, Jessica Alupo, and fellow Guild Presidents in welcoming H.E. Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, Fourth President of the Republic of Kenya, to Makerere University for the Guild Leaders’ Summit, where he will deliver a keynote to East African student leaders,” Kagingo posted.

tion in welcoming Kenyatta, alongside a host of student leaders and university officials. The summit’s opening ceremony was marked by enthusiastic engagement, with participants voicing a strong commitment to building a united and progressive East Africa.
In his address, Kenyatta emphasized the importance of youth in driving the continent’s future, advocating for inclusive governance, innovation, and cross-border collaboration. He commended Makerere University for its enduring role in nurturing leaders, noting that several of East Africa’s most influential figures are its alumni.
Earlier in the evening, Kenyatta also paid a courtesy visit to Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at State House, Entebbe. Museveni later took to X to share highlights of their meeting. “Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta paid me a courtesy call at State House, Entebbe this evening. He was here for the Guild Leaders’ Summit at Makerere University,” Museveni wrote.
The Ugandan president praised the summit and the students’ interest in the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) foundational principles: Patriotism, Pan-Africanism, Socio-economic Transformation, and Democracy. “I welcome this initiative and will meet with the Guild Leadership Academy to discuss it further,” he added.
Organizers say the summit provides a unique opportunity for the next generation of East African leaders to exchange ideas with experienced statesmen. Discussions throughout the summit are expected to focus on strengthening institutional leadership, promoting innovation-driven economies, and advancing regional unity through youth initiatives.
As East Africa grapples with economic, political, and climate challenges, events like the Guild Leaders’ Summit aim to ensure that young leaders are equipped to shape a resilient and integrated future for the region.
