Why I Never Drank Again: Museveni Recalls First & Last Sip Of Alcohol

By Our Reporter

In a candid reflection shared in 2021, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni offered personal insights into his lifestyle choices, crediting discipline—especially abstaining from alcohol—as a major contributor to his long life and health.

Speaking during a public address, Museveni recounted his brief encounter with alcohol in the 1960s and why he chose to never indulge again.

“Discipline is good. In September [2021], I will be 77 years [old]. This is because I don’t have space for alcohol,” Museveni said, attributing his physical well-being and longevity to clean living and self-restraint.

He explained that, despite peer pressure in his youth, alcohol never appealed to him. His first and only experience occurred in 1966 in Mbarara when a friend convinced him to try beer.

“I tried beer; it’s so bitter, like omululuza (bitter leaf). I asked why they were drinking it. He told me, ‘You’ll know the sweetness later,’” Museveni recalled.

Not convinced, he later sampled whisky. “I tried Johnnie Walker, and it was like fire. If it could burn my tongue, what would have happened to the liver and other internal organs?” he quipped.

Museveni’s anecdote was more than just personal reflection—it served as a message to the youth and the public on the importance of self-discipline, healthy choices, and rejecting harmful substances.

His remarks were widely circulated online and reignited public debate on alcohol consumption and lifestyle habits.

As Museveni continues to serve as one of Africa’s longest-standing leaders, his personal habits and reflections remain of great interest to both supporters and critics.

This moment offered a rare glimpse into the personal philosophy that has shaped his leadership and life over decades.
