By Frank Kamuntu

The business community, political leaders, and thousands of mourners gathered today at the Hindu Crematorium in Lugogo to pay their final respects to Rajiv Ruparelia, the only son of business magnate Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia. The 35-year-old entrepreneur and Managing Director of the Ruparelia Group was cremated in an emotional ceremony that brought together dignitaries from across the country.

The late Rajiv, widely recognized as a rising star in Uganda’s business landscape, passed away earlier this week, leaving a profound void in the hearts of many.

A Tribute from All Walks of Life

The ceremony was attended by prominent figures including Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi, Prince David Kintu Wasajja from the Buganda Kingdom, members of the Kwagalana Group and numerous business leaders and politicians.

Delivering Kwagalana Group’s emotional tribute,Godfrey Kirumira described Rajiv as “a shining example of a true visionary leader and a unifier.” Kirumira praised Rajiv’s humility and approachability, emphasizing his potential to transform the business landscape in Uganda. “He dreamt big, and his leadership inspired many,” Kirumira said, before extending heartfelt condolences to Dr. Sudhir and Jyotsna Ruparelia.

Family Rememberances

Rajiv’s wife, Naiya Khagram Ruparelia, spoke of the deep love her husband had for her and their daughter, Inara Ruparelia. “Rajiv was not only a loving husband but also a devoted father who always put our family first,” she said.

His sisters, Meera and Sheena Ruparelia, offered moving reflections on Rajiv’s character. Meera shared fond childhood memories and praised her brother’s protective nature. “He always made sure we were safe, even when he was still a young boy,” she recalled. Sheena added, “Despite being the youngest, Rajiv looked after all of us. He was generous, full of joy, and had a heart of gold.”

A Father’s Deep Grief

In his address, Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia spoke with great emotion, thanking all those who stood with the family during this painful time. “As a father, this is a loss beyond words. I mentored Rajiv into business, and he proved to be immensely gifted, talented, and fast-learning,” he said.

Dr. Sudhir highlighted Rajiv’s philanthropic heart, noting his support for vulnerable children, including young rappers Fresh Kid and Felista, who received full scholarships at Kampala Parents School. He also recalled Rajiv’s passion for motorsport, admitting that he once tried to stop him from racing for his safety.

“Rajiv was the light of our family, a source of joy and unforgettable memories,” he said.

Honoring His Legacy

In a touching moment, Rajiv’s mother, Jyotsna Ruparelia, revealed that the Ruparelia Group’s next major project will be named Inara Tower, in honor of Rajiv’s daughter. “It’s our way of ensuring Rajiv’s love and vision live on through his daughter,” she said.

A Nation’s Recognition

A message from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, delivered by Speaker Anita Among, praised Rajiv as “a promising businessman with a bright future.” The President recalled Uganda’s economic void in 1986 and acknowledged the critical role played by the returning Asian-Ugandan community, particularly the Ruparelia family, in rebuilding the economy.

In a gesture of solidarity, President Museveni extended a condolence contribution of UGX 50 million to the Ruparelia family.

From Swift News; “Rajiv Ruparelia’s legacy lives on—not only through towering business ventures and philanthropic efforts—but in the countless lives he touched. Uganda has lost a bold dreamer, but his vision and spirit will continue to inspire generations.”  RIP.
