Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has ordered the release of Brigadier General Johnson Namanya from military detention following what has been described as an amicable and constructive engagement.
According to a statement issued by the Acting Director Defence Public Information, Colonel Chris Magezi, Brig Gen Namanya was cleared of all allegations that had been levelled against him after a meeting with the Chief of Defence Forces.
“Brig Gen Namanya has today been released from detention after an amicable meeting in which he was cleared of all allegations. He will resume his military duties accordingly,” Col Magezi said.
Brig Gen Namanya and Major General Don Nabasa were arrested last week for unknown reasons.
Security analysts had earlier interpreted the detentions as part of a structured internal audit aimed at strengthening professionalism, operational efficiency, and leadership alignment within the force. Such measures, they noted, are increasingly common in modern militaries seeking to maintain readiness and institutional credibility.
Brig Gen Namanya’s release, coupled with his clearance, now signals the conclusion of his review process and a restoration of confidence in his role within the army. His return to active duty is expected to reinforce continuity within the UPDF’s command structure.
The handling of the matter, from detention to clearance, reflects a controlled and procedural approach by the military leadership, emphasising due process while safeguarding institutional integrity.
Observers say the move underscores a broader trend under Gen Muhoozi’s leadership, where swift administrative actions are paired with internal reconciliation mechanisms to maintain cohesion within the ranks.
As Brig Gen Namanya resumes his duties, the episode highlights the UPDF’s continued focus on discipline, accountability, and the steady strengthening of one of the region’s most established defence institutions.
