Uganda is mourning the passing of retired Supreme Court Justice Augustine Sebuturo Nshimye, a distinguished jurist, legislator, and founding member of the National Resistance Movement, whose decades-long service helped shape the country’s legal and political landscape.
Justice Nshimye, who has served on the Supreme Court of Uganda since 2015, leaves behind a legacy defined by commitment to justice, public service, and institutional development.
His career in public service began humbly in 1967 as a senior clerk, steadily rising through the judiciary ranks. Between 1986 and 1988, he served as Deputy Chief Registrar before transitioning into private legal practice in 1988.
Justice Nshimye’s influence extended beyond the courtroom into national politics. From 1988 to 2008, he represented Mityana South Constituency in Parliament, while also serving as Minister for Regional Cooperation under the NRM government. His dual role as a legislator and policymaker positioned him as a key figure in Uganda’s governance during a critical period of national rebuilding.
In 2008, he returned to the judiciary as a Justice of the Court of Appeal, which doubles as the Constitutional Court. His expertise and experience saw him appointed as an acting Justice of the Supreme Court in 2010, before his substantive appointment to the apex court in September 2015 where he retired in March 2017 after hitting 70yrs, the mandatory retirement age.
Beyond his judicial duties, Justice Nshimye also served as Inspector of Courts, a role he held concurrently, contributing significantly to strengthening accountability and efficiency within the judiciary.
Colleagues and leaders across the legal and political spectrum have described him as a principled, disciplined, and visionary figure whose contributions will have a lasting impact on Uganda’s justice system.
Details regarding funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
As the nation reflects on his life, Justice Nshimye is remembered as a towering figure who dedicated his life to the service of law, leadership, and country.
