The prime suspect in last week’s deadly attack at a Ggaba daycare centre has been formally charged with murder and remanded to Luzira government prison, as the community reels from the tragedy.
Christopher Okello Onyum, 34, appeared before Makindye Chief Magistrates Court on Monday, facing four counts of murder under sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code Act. The charges relate to the deaths of Ignatius Sseruyange, Ryan Odeke, Keisha Ogenorwoth Otim, and Gideon Oteku, all victims of the horrific incident at Gaba Childhood Development Centre on April 2, 2026.
According to the prosecution, Onyum acted with malice aforethought, unlawfully causing the deaths of the children. However, the accused was not asked to enter a plea because the matter is triable only by the High Court.
The state was represented by Chief State Attorney Muwaganya, while trial grade one magistrate Aidah Nanjala remanded Onyum to Luzira prison, setting the matter for mention tomorrow to formally handle the charges.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Makindye Division, raising urgent questions about security in childcare facilities and the safety of young children in public spaces. Community leaders and parents have expressed grief and outrage, calling for swift justice and measures to prevent future tragedies.
Authorities have assured the public that the investigation is ongoing and that security at educational institutions will be reviewed in the wake of the attack.
This case, still in its early stages, is expected to be heard at the High Court, where the accused could face life imprisonment if convicted.
