Just In: Court Denies NUP’s Mufumbiro Bail To Bury Wife

    By Swift Reporter

The Chief Magistrate’s Court at Kanyanya has denied temporary bail to Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, the National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy spokesperson, preventing him from attending the burial of his wife, Edith Katende Mufumbiro.

Edith passed away in the early hours of Wednesday after a prolonged cancer battle and is scheduled to be laid to rest on Saturday, April 11. However, Mufumbiro who remains on remand will not be able to physically bid her farewell following the court’s ruling.

The decision comes despite a deeply emotional handwritten letter addressed to the judiciary, in which Mufumbiro pleaded for temporary release on humanitarian grounds.

In the letter, addressed to the Chief Justice and routed through prison authorities, Mufumbiro detailed his prolonged detention at Luzira Upper Prison since September 2025 and outlined the charges he faces, including unlawful drilling and incitement to commit an offence.

Expressing grief over his wife’s passing, he wrote:

“With great sadness I have learnt of the passing of my dear wife Edith Katende who has been battling cancer for a considerable time.”

He further revealed that in her final moments, his wife expressed a last wish for him to be by her side and to lay her to rest.

“Edith… expressed her last and most earnest wish; that I be her by side and that I be permitted to lay her to rest,” he wrote.

In a heartfelt appeal, Mufumbiro urged the judiciary to consider his request not as defiance of the law, but as a final act of love and dignity.

“I approach Your Lordship not as a man who disregards the law, but as a man who is taking the law in its most human and dignified expression to permit me one final act of love for my wife.”

He also assured the court of his willingness to comply with any conditions that would be set for his temporary release.

Despite the plea, the Chief Magistrate’s Court at Kanyanya declined to grant him bail as Judiciary had not honored his prayers.

Mufumbiro faces multiple charges, including incitement to commit an offence, unlawful assembly, and unlawful military drilling.
