The Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has officially endorsed Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa to retain the position of Deputy Speaker in the upcoming 12th Parliament, further strengthening his standing within the ruling establishment.

In a statement shared Tuesday morning on X, Gen. Muhoozi revealed that the decision followed guidance from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who also serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces.

“On the issue of Deputy Speaker, after getting guidance from the Commander in Chief, all PLU MPs and PLU leaning MPs will support Rt. Honourable Thomas Tayebwa for that position. Congratulations Rt. Honourable,” Muhoozi posted.

The endorsement is seen as a major boost for Tayebwa ahead of the formal opening of the 12th Parliament, where the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) is expected to unveil its final leadership line-up.

Tayebwa has steadily built a reputation as one of the country’s most energetic and articulate young leaders. Since assuming the office of Deputy Speaker in 2022 following the death of former Speaker Jacob Oulanyah, he has been praised by sections of legislators for his calm leadership style, efficiency in handling parliamentary business, and commitment to strengthening legislative oversight.

The latest development comes at a time when the political landscape within the ruling party continues to evolve. Former Speaker Anita Annet Among recently withdrew from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament, citing the need to promote party unity and harmony.

Among’s decision followed ongoing investigations into allegations connected to wealth declaration and corruption claims. Inspector General of Government Aisha Batala Nalule confirmed that her office had received complaints regarding possible non-compliance with provisions of the Leadership Code Act.

Security agencies reportedly conducted searches at properties linked to Among in Nakasero and Kigo, where documents, electronic gadgets, and luxury vehicles were recovered for forensic examination. Despite the investigations, Among has pledged full cooperation with authorities.

Meanwhile, the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a civic organisation associated with Muhoozi, had earlier fronted Defence Minister Jacob Oboth Oboth for the Speakership position.

Political observers say Muhoozi’s latest declaration signals growing consensus within the ruling camp and could pave the way for a smoother transition as Parliament prepares to commence business under the new term.

For Tayebwa, the endorsement represents another significant milestone in his fast-rising political career and cements his place among the influential figures shaping Uganda’s legislative future.
