Exploring Tech Heights: KIU Leads AI Revolution At Uganda Higher Education Exhibition

By Our Reporter

The 15th Uganda Higher Education Institutions Exhibition concluded on March 28, 2025, after three days of showcasing the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. The event, a key feature of Education Week, was inaugurated by the Minister of Education and the First Lady, Janet Museveni, drawing thousands of education stakeholders from across the country.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, who officiated at the exhibition, commended institutions for their commitment to innovation. He urged universities to prioritize AI integration to equip students with the skills necessary for the modern workforce.

“I am impressed by the level of innovation displayed here. Our higher education institutions play a crucial role in driving economic growth and development. AI is no longer a luxury but a necessity in today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world. Institutions must embrace AI to ensure students remain competitive in the global job market,” Tayebwa emphasized.

Kampala International University (KIU) was among the standout exhibitors, presenting cutting-edge AI-driven projects, including a rescue robot, a smart bin, and self-help AI tools designed to enhance education and everyday life. The university’s exhibition demonstrated its commitment to technological advancement and academic excellence.

Assoc. Prof. Eric Mabonga, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Western Campus) of KIU, reaffirmed the university’s dedication to innovation. “As we celebrate 25 years of quality education under the theme #ExploringTheHeights, KIU continues to push the boundaries of knowledge and technology. Our innovations reflect our dedication to shaping the future of education in Uganda and beyond,” Mabonga stated.

He encouraged students to embrace emerging technologies and leverage them for personal and professional growth. “In this rapidly evolving digital landscape, we must harness AI and other emerging technologies to improve education outcomes and enhance our competitiveness in the global economy,” he added.

The closing ceremony was presided over by Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Sports, who emphasized the need for institutions to adapt to AI-driven learning methodologies. “We must use AI to enhance education, improve teaching methods, and better prepare students for the future,” she stated.

Dr. Turyagyenda also urged young learners to develop both hard and soft skills, cautioning against relying solely on AI as a shortcut. “Young people, you make up half of the population. You must develop skills to thrive in this ever-changing world. AI should be used to understand and learn, not just to copy,” she advised.

The exhibition provided a platform for institutions to showcase advancements in education, research, and community engagement. KIU was recognized among the top seven exhibitors, further cementing its position as a leader in innovation and excellence. Mountains of the Moon University was named the overall outstanding exhibitor.

As Uganda’s education sector continues to evolve, events like Education Week catalyze innovation, collaboration, and excellence. KIU’s continued leadership in embracing AI and digital transformation underscores its relevance in shaping the future of higher education.

As the university marks its silver jubilee under the banner KIUAt25 – #ExploringTheHeights, its legacy of quality education and innovation remains strong, inspiring future generations to reach new heights.
