City Under Siege! Over 200 Suspects Arrested In Deadly Night Raids Across Kampala

    By Our Reporter

At least 200 suspects have been arrested in the latest wave of security operations by the Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala, as authorities intensify efforts to dismantle criminal gangs plaguing the capital.

The sweeping nighttime crackdown, codenamed “FUKUZA KAWENJA”, was executed on Monday, July 28, targeting known black spots and high-risk zones across the city. All suspects are currently detained at CPS Kampala, awaiting a joint screening exercise before formal charges are brought in court.

According to District Police Commander Tukundane Abrams, the ongoing campaign is part of a strategic, intelligence-led initiative aimed at uprooting repeat offenders and restoring public safety.

“This is a continuing effort to restore law and order in the city,” said DPC Tukundane. “We’re working closely with local leaders, intelligence units, and area commanders to dismantle networks behind robberies, drug trafficking, and violent crime.”

The “FUKUZA KAWENJA” operation, officially launched on July 22, 2025, began with a first phase that led to the arrest of over 120 suspects, many found in possession of narcotics, sharp weapons, and suspected stolen items.

In the second phase conducted last night, security personnel conducted coordinated sweeps across Makindye, Rubaga, and Kawempe Divisions, zeroing in on individuals linked to:

    • Street muggings
    • Break-ins
    • Drug peddling
    • Organized robbery

Police raided hotspots including Wabiku Zone, Balintuma, Kiwatule, Kamuli Road, and communities along the Northern Bypass, which have been flagged as dens of habitual criminals.

During the raids, law enforcement recovered key exhibits including knives, housebreaking tools, opium, and other illegal substances.

The crackdown is being led by the CPS Kampala Command Team under DPC Tukundane’s supervision, working in conjunction with:

    • Area post commanders
    • Crime intelligence officers
    • The OC Station
    • Local council leaders

“This is not a one-time sweep,” Tukundane noted. “We’re operating in phases until we dismantle every criminal network operating in and around Kampala.”

Police have appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity in their neighborhoods.

“We encourage the public to actively support this operation by providing information on known criminals. Your safety is our priority,” the CPS team urged.

Authorities have reassured the public that all suspects will be processed lawfully. The screening process, currently underway, aims to separate innocent individuals from those with substantial evidence against them.

“Those with clear cases will be charged in court. Those found innocent will be released without delay,” DPC Tukundane emphasized.

The “FUKUZA KAWENJA” operation is part of a broader Kampala-wide law enforcement campaign targeting urban crime ahead of the festive season and the approaching 2026 political calendar.

Earlier this month, separate operations saw 48 suspects arrested in Kajjansi Division and another 99 rounded up across Greater Kampala for various offenses, including drug possession and street robbery.

As authorities widen the net against lawlessness, the success of this campaign may prove critical in restoring public trust in urban security mechanisms.
