”Sorry Your ‘Gamba Nogu’ Can’t Work Here”- Court Jails Police Officer Katungi Alex Over Extortion Targeting Investors & Grabbing Wetland

By Our Reporter

The State House Anti-Corruption Unit, in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), this afternoon arraigned Police Constable Katungi Alex before the Kajjansi Chief Magistrates Court on multiple charges related to assault and abuse of office.

PC Katungi, an officer attached to the Environmental Protection Police Unit under the Ministry of Water and Environment, is accused of assaulting several individuals in the Kajjansi area. The assaults are allegedly linked to his claims that the victims were engaging in illegal developments on wetland land.

According to the prosecution, PC Katungi has been the subject of ongoing investigations following a surge of public complaints. He stands accused of harassment, unlawful arrests, land grabbing, and extortion, reportedly targeting individuals and investors in both Entebbe and Kajjansi.

In addition to these allegations, the officer is also under investigation for reportedly misusing his authority by personally setting up unauthorized developments within wetland areas, in direct contradiction to the environmental protection mandate of his unit.

PC Katungi was charged jointly with Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Hadali Keneth, who faces charges of conspiracy to commit the said offenses. The court ordered that both officers be remanded until April 9, 2025, as investigations continue.

The arraignment underscores the government’s ongoing efforts to hold public officials accountable and crack down on corruption and misconduct, particularly in sectors as sensitive as environmental protection and land management.

The State House Anti-Corruption Unit has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all public servants, regardless of rank, are held to the highest standards of integrity and conduct.
