A Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner unexpectedly collapsed onto its nose while being prepared for a scheduled flight to Los Angeles, forcing the airline to cancel the journey and launch an investigation into the incident.
The aircraft’s front landing gear gave way on Thursday afternoon at Frankfurt Airport as ground crews were fueling and provisioning the jet for departure. Dramatic footage shared by FlightRadar24 captured the moment the state-of-the-art aircraft suddenly dropped forward onto the tarmac while still connected to the passenger jetway.
According to Lufthansa, the incident occurred before passengers had boarded the aircraft, preventing what could have been a much more serious situation. Several crew members reportedly sustained injuries during the collapse, although the extent of those injuries has not been disclosed.
“The aircraft’s nose landing gear unexpectedly folded in while parked,” a Lufthansa spokesperson said in a statement to the German Press Agency (DPA).
The Boeing 787-9 involved in the incident had been in service for only six months, making the malfunction particularly notable. Lufthansa immediately activated its crisis response team and canceled the scheduled flight to Los Angeles.
Authorities and airline officials have begun examining the circumstances surrounding the collapse. It remains unclear whether the incident was caused by a mechanical fault, maintenance issue, or human error.
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is one of the world’s most advanced long-haul aircraft and can accommodate up to 296 passengers. Lufthansa currently operates a fleet of 19 Boeing 787 aircraft as part of its long-haul network modernization program.
The damaged aircraft has been removed from service pending a full technical assessment. Further details are expected as investigators continue their review of the incident.
