Multiple Borrowings Won’t Save You From Poverty, Eat Less & Save Big: Lyantonde Teachers ‘Lectured’

By Ampaire Patience

Lyantonde teachers on Friday joined a magnitude of teachers globally to celebrate World Teachers’ Day, held every 5th of October to celebrate the work of teachers.

This year, the Day was held under the theme; The Teachers We Need for the Education We Want: The Global Imperative to Reverse the Teacher Shortage‘.

At an event held at Salama Shield Foundation, area Woman MP Honorable Pauline Kemirembe Kyaka who was the Chief Guest lashed out at teachers accusing them for doing enough to in the right upbringing of learners hence the mushrooming rotten behaviors in the current generation.

”For example, this corruption we are having in Uganda today is partially because teachers have not done enough in training our children rightly, a child comes up with such a mindset that to get rich I must steal. I request you let’s double our efforts to build a wonderful generation for our country,” Pauline urged teachers.

Jeremy Namanya the Deputy RDC Lyantonde district urged everyone to honour the teachers for their work, dedication, passion, and commitment to the nation. He added that the government is placing the teachers on priority and is considering them for salary enhancement.

”Don’t lose morale, the government has big plans for you, stay patriotic and determined for the success of our learners,” Jeremy requested teachers before urging them not to settle for less; ”As teachers in this modern era, I wish you can think of upgrading, learning never stops, this will help you with new tactics of handling students who are born in this fourth industrial revolution.”

Meanwhile, the same event attracted hopeful Lyantonde leaders, among them including Ms Doreen Katushabe Birungi who is eyeing to unseat Hon Pauline. She challenged her ‘rival-to-be’ Hon Pauline to table the issue of salary enhancement for teachers saying that teachers work under harsh conditions especially poor accommodation which bleeds poor service delivery to the children of the wanainchis.

At the same function Twinemukama Leonard Keihura the team leader at Stanbic Bank Lyantonde branch hailed the teachers terming them ”parents of the world.”

He went on to advise them to avoid multiple borrowing syndrome, saying that a teacher can never sit in class comfortably with loans in his/her neck, thus advising them to spend wisely the ‘little’ earnings they get every month.

On there other hand, Kenneth Tumwebaze the chairman of the Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) Lyantonde branch called upon the government of Uganda to look into the issue of salary enhancement noting that the future of education is being affected because some of the teachers are running out of the profession due to poor conditions leading to the suffering of the learners.

He added that almost 500 teachers die every year succumbing to various illnesses, leaving a huge gap in the education sector.

Further, Kenneth revealed,” as teachers we still face the problem of unparalleled ratio whereby in Lyantonde one teacher instead of teaching like 50 learners you find him handling over 100 in one classroom, such a situation can’t yield quality education, we request the government to do something about this.”

Nambonyera Agnes alias Kalakata also eying to ‘dethrone’ Hon Pauline thanked the teachers who try their best to compete at the national level in training learners.

Deborah Lwabwogo Tuhairirwe the Special Presidential Assistant in Charge of Politics highlighted some of the challenges teachers face like overcrowding of students in classrooms, and walking long distances to places of work, all of which lead to poor service delivery.

She also re-echoed the need for a swift increment of teachers’ salaries.
