Danger! Rwanda Suspends 11 Ugandan Alcoholic Brands Due To Health Concerns

    By Our Reporter

Rwanda has temporarily suspended the importation of 11 alcoholic beverages from Uganda and ordered their immediate recall from the market, citing public health concerns.

The directive, issued by the Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (Rwanda FDA) on August 5, 2026, is part of a broader crackdown on 52 imported alcoholic products from six countries. The regulator said the move was taken under Rwanda’s food and drug laws to protect consumers, although it did not specify the exact concerns behind the decision.

The affected Ugandan brands are Bond 7 Whisky, Campfire Gin, Club 5 Gin, Tembo Liqueur, X5 Gin, Jonney’s Gin, X5 Liqueur, Pan Master Whisky, X5 Whisky, Gilbey’s Flavoured Gin and V&A Imp Cr Lqr.

The products are manufactured by Uganda Breweries Limited, John Distillers (U) Ltd and Glorrie Industries Limited.

The suspension also affects alcoholic beverages imported from India, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi and Poland, indicating a wider regulatory enforcement exercise rather than action directed at Uganda alone.

Rwanda FDA instructed importers to immediately begin recalling the affected products from distributors and retailers, who have also been ordered to stop selling them and return all remaining stock. Importers must submit recall reports within three working days.

Consumers have been advised to stop consuming the listed alcoholic beverages with immediate effect, while all advertisements and promotional materials relating to the products must be withdrawn from the market.

The authority warned that failure to comply with the directives will attract regulatory action and noted that the list of suspended products could be expanded as inspections continue.

The suspension comes amid Rwanda’s intensified campaign to strengthen regulation of alcoholic beverages. Last week, President Paul Kagame warned that excessive alcohol consumption was harming the country’s youth and undermining their future ambitions.

Speaking during the Indangamirwa meeting on July 29, Kagame urged young people to avoid alcohol abuse, describing it as a growing threat to their wellbeing and development.

Days later, Rwandan authorities shut down several local alcohol manufacturing factories and halted the distribution of their products as part of ongoing public health enforcement measures.

Rwanda also maintains strict controls on alcohol sales, with bars and nightclubs required to close at 1:00 a.m. on weekdays and 2:00 a.m. on weekends.

It remains unclear how long the temporary suspension will remain in force or what conditions the affected manufacturers will have to meet before their products can return to the Rwandan market. Neither the affected Ugandan manufacturers nor Ugandan authorities had issued an official response by the time of publication.
