Sironko District Woman MP Asha Nabulo Mafabi has partnered with One Ummah Uganda to improve access to safe water in underserved communities after commissioning five new boreholes across the district.
The new water sources are expected to ease the burden on residents who have been walking long distances in search of water, with women and adolescent girls bearing much of the responsibility for collecting water for their families.
The boreholes were established in Bunabonyo in Buwasa Sub-county, Kidowa in Nalusala Sub-county, Nabudisirua A in Dahami Sub-county, Mutufu Town Council and Makonje in Sironko Town Council.
The intervention targets densely populated communities where residents have for years struggled to access reliable sources of safe and clean water.
For women and girls in particular, the lack of nearby water sources has presented risks beyond the daily burden of walking long distances.
Irene Nabende, the women’s chairperson in Bunabonyo Village, said women and girls previously had to travel far from their homes to collect water, exposing them to dangers including sexual violence.
She said the situation had also contributed to teenage pregnancies and school dropouts, as girls spent considerable time away from school and their homes while searching for water.
“We now have water near us and hope this problem will be solved,” Nabende said, while thanking Nabulo and her partners for the intervention.
Residents in other beneficiary communities also welcomed the new facilities.
Peresi Mukwana, a resident of Bunagawoya, said the community had endured significant difficulties due to limited access to water and thanked the Woman MP for supporting the intervention.
Sironko District LCV Chairman Alex Guga Nabende said the district continues to face a major water challenge and appealed for more development partners to support the construction of additional water sources.
He commended Nabulo and One Ummah Uganda for responding to the needs of communities that have struggled to access safe water.
Nabulo said the intervention demonstrates the importance of cooperation between elected leaders, development organisations and communities in addressing basic needs.
She thanked One Ummah Uganda for supporting the borehole project and other interventions in the past, saying leaders should strive to leave behind tangible improvements in the communities they serve.
“To know your people’s problems, you have to go out and lobby for solutions. The wars of politics are over, and now we are focusing on development,” Nabulo said.
She encouraged residents to work through their local leaders to document challenges affecting their communities so that the issues can be identified and addressed progressively.
Nabulo also linked her approach to leadership with delivering on the commitments made to voters, saying tangible development should form the basis for seeking continued public support.
“After five years, there will be no need for campaigning. I will simply come back to ask for your vote for a second term because I will have worked and delivered on the pledges I made,” she said.
The new boreholes come as communities in Sironko continue to call for increased investment in water infrastructure, particularly in densely populated areas where existing sources are insufficient.
For the beneficiary communities, however, the new facilities mean more than just access to water. They are expected to reduce the time spent searching for the essential resource, ease the burden on women and girls and allow children to spend more time in school and other productive activities.
