By Patience Ampaire

Police in Lyantonde district is having a famous businessman Byamugisha James alias Byabakwo in Cell C Kooki C, Lyantonde town in its coolers over theft.

According to the chairman LC1 Emmanuel Ssagala, at around 3pm on Thursday, he received a call from the O.C Kaguta Road, informing him that police wanted to make an operation in his cell. He says when they reached at Byabakwo’s shop, they found many exhibits of stolen properties, including the CCTV cameras that were installed by the police for security purposes.

Other exhibits found at Byakakwo’s shop included; cameras, flat irons, microphones, cables, batteries, computers, cookers, and flat screens among others.

Emmanuel noted that as locals, they are embarrassed for a person who had become a role model in business to find that he was building his name through theft.

Jeremy Namanya the deputy RDC Lyantonde district says that as security they have been recording multiple criminal cases like housebreaking and robbery, adding they are aware of the case of Byabakwo. He thanked the works of LC1 chairpersons against fighting criminality in their areas of jurisdiction.

The deputy RDC said that fighting criminality is a concern of every person, including the locals. ” it requires local leaders, people themselves, police, office of the RDC and other security agencies.”

Jeremy said that criminals in Lyantonde collaborate with other criminals in other districts, especially in Lwengo, Rakai, Kyazanga, and Masaka and when things are stolen in Lyantonde are taken to those districts and vice versa.

”I therefore advise the public to avoid mob justice because if you do, we shall not get the vital information from these criminals that will enable us to know the whereabouts of the entire criminal gangs,” said Mr Jeremy.

He advised parents to put keen eyes on their children, saying that some criminals use children below 18 years to commit crimes.

To the youths, he said that they should involve themselves in government programs like Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, Youth Livelihoods programs etc and free training hubs so that they can get busy and get out of criminal life.

ASP Dagrous Kiwanuka the Lyantonde District Police station O.C says that theft has become rampant in the district but asked residents to remain calm because as police they are working day and night to curb the vice.

He noted that after the increase in the cases, they decided to make operations, and mentioned that an operation that was carried out on the 30th of September left three thieves under arrest. Among them was Byamugisha James alias Byabakwo, Tumusiime Bonnifance, and Ssenteza Jimmy alias Gorora.

He assured the residents that whoever came with the proof about the rescued property, he/she would regain the property through the police. He also added that those who had reported to the police should come with their reference numbers.

Head of Leity Nyakahita Church of Uganda where Byabakwo was also a member says that he was surprised to find out that the church speakers that were stolen and other musical instruments were found at Byakakwo’s place.

In Lyantonde district, places like Kyabuuza and Kyamiyoonga have turned into centers for thieves. A one Katsigaire Dickson alias Kigele says that the thieves cut his roof and stole his things including sacks of stopper, side cap among others.

By the time of writing this story, different people with references and pieces of evidence had started picking up their stolen items from Lyantonde police. Great, thanks to our ever-alert reporter, Patience Ampaire!.
