Police in Kampala are investigating a suspected stabbing and arson attack in Bunga that left two children dead and three others injured, with their mother identified as the main suspect.

The incident occurred at about 4am on Thursday, August 20, 2026, in Kalungu, Bunga, Ggaba Parish, Makindye Division, according to Kampala Metropolitan Police.

The deceased have been identified as 14-year-old Khadija Daizy and seven-year-old Hawa Dalena.

Police said Khadija was found dead inside her bedroom, while Hawa succumbed to her injuries later at Nsambya Hospital, where she had been rushed for treatment.

Three other children, aged 13, eight and five, survived the attack with stab wounds and were taken to hospital for medical attention.

Police identified their mother, 43-year-old Dorothy Namayo, a Kenyan national, as the main suspect in the incident.

Namayo was also found injured at the scene and was taken to Mulago National Referral Hospital for treatment. She remains under police supervision as investigations continue.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the attack came to light after a housemaid heard children crying for help from inside the house.

“The maid immediately opened the house and discovered several children with severe stab wounds,” Owoyesigyire said.

Police said a Toyota Hiace vehicle parked at the residence was also set on fire and completely destroyed.

Firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze, after which investigators recovered a jerrycan suspected to have contained petrol.

Homicide detectives, scene-of-crime officers and fire investigators examined the residence and collected evidence for forensic analysis as police work to establish what happened and the motive behind the attack.

The bodies of Khadija and Hawa were conveyed to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examinations.

Police said statements had been recorded from witnesses as investigators continued to piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The case has been registered at Kabalagala Police Division under murder, attempted murder and arson.

Investigations are ongoing, while the surviving children continue to receive medical care. Police are expected to rely on forensic evidence, witness accounts and other findings to establish the circumstances and motive behind the attack.
