Two people have been killed and two others injured in a three-vehicle crash along the Kampala–Gulu Highway in Luweero District.
The crash occurred at about 1:30am on Saturday at Naluvule and involved a white Fuso truck, a red Sino truck carrying sand and a red Mercedes Actros.
According to Savannah Regional Police spokesperson ASP Sam Twineamazima, preliminary findings indicate that the Fuso truck was travelling from Kampala towards Luweero when it collided with the Mercedes Actros, which had reportedly broken down on the road.
Twineamazima said the impact caused the Fuso to mount the stationary Mercedes and fatally strike one of its passengers.
“The Fuso mounted the broken-down Mercedes Actros and fatally struck its passenger,” Twineamazima said.
The situation was further complicated when the approaching Sino truck encountered the crash scene. Police said the driver swerved in an attempt to avoid a head-on collision but the vehicle subsequently overturned.
Twineamazima said strong lights from the approaching Sino truck may have contributed to the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“To avoid a head-on collision, the Sino truck diverted off the road and overturned,” he said.
Police said the two deceased were unidentified adult males. They were reportedly passengers on the Sino truck and died after the vehicle overturned.
Two other people sustained injuries in the crash and were rushed to a nearby clinic for medical attention.
Police officers moved the bodies to Luweero Main Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash continued.
The Fuso truck was towed to Luweero Police Station, while the Sino truck and Mercedes Actros remained at the scene pending the arrival of heavy-duty towing equipment from Kampala.
Police said investigations are ongoing to establish the precise circumstances that led to the collision, including the condition of the broken-down vehicle, visibility at the scene and the actions of the drivers involved.
Authorities have urged motorists using the Kampala–Gulu Highway to exercise extra caution, particularly at night and around vehicles that have broken down on the road.
