Passenger’s Video Yields: Link Bus Driver Arrested & Fired For Whatsapping While Driving

The Link Bus driver with registration number UBG 188P, identified as Andrew Jemba, 43 years old, seen in a viral video using his phone while driving along Kampala – Fort Portal road, was intercepted and arrested at Kyegegwa Police Station on November 1, 2023, around 11 am.

This driver, Mr. Andrew Jjemba, was captured on video texting while driving. The video went viral on social media, leading to his suspension from duty and subsequent arrest by the police.

He is now charged under Regulation 3(a) & 4 of Traffic and Road Safety (Restriction of Use of Mobile Telephone) Regulations, 2004.

Link Bus Services’ spokesperson Mr. Tom Best Aliinde, says that the company learned of the viral video from social media and promptly initiated an investigation.

Based on preliminary findings, Andrew Jjemba was suspended immediately. The company strongly condemned the driver’s actions, emphasizing that he had recently completed their annual refresher training.

The traffic police has since commended the public for their vigilance regarding road safety and urged everyone to continue reporting and sharing any information about traffic violations on roads through the toll-free number 0800199099.

Police has warned all motorists against using mobile phones while driving, as it is recognized as one of the leading causes of road crashes in the country.
