BREAKING: Tooro Kingdom’s Royal Committee Picks George Desmond Kamurasi As New King

    By Swift Reporter

The Royal Succession Committee of the Tooro Kingdom has selected George Desmond Kamurasi, 36, as the next Omukama of Tooro, paving the way for the kingdom to begin the formal process of installing a successor to the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

The decision was reached on Friday, September 4, 2026, during a meeting of the 21-member Royal Succession Committee held at Fort Motel in Fort Portal City.

According to a statement by journalist and commentator Andrew Mwenda, 15 of the 18 committee members who attended Friday’s meeting voted in favour of Kamurasi, giving him the required backing to emerge as the committee’s choice.

The committee is chaired by Omusuuga Charles Akiiki Kamurasi and was constituted by the Royal Clan of Tooro, the Ababiito, on August 28, 2026, following the death of King Oyo.

Mwenda said the committee has been meeting continuously to consider the succession question and consulted key stakeholders before arriving at its decision.

    Who Is George Kamurasi?

George Desmond Kamurasi comes from the royal family and is the son of George Desmond “Jimmy” Mugenyi, the younger brother of the late King Patrick David Mathew Olimi Kaboyo II.

According to Mwenda, Kamurasi was identified as the second in line to succeed his elder brother Olimi Kaboyo II under the will of their late father, King George Rukidi III.

His selection therefore places the succession decision within the established royal lineage and succession arrangements of the Babiito clan.

    Muhoozi, Government Back Kamurasi Choice

The development has also received backing from senior government and military officials.

Mwenda said he held discussions Friday evening with Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces and Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda, as well as Gen Kayanja Muhanga, the Commander of the Land Forces.

According to Mwenda, Gen Muhoozi endorsed the committee’s decision, saying it was consistent with Tooro customs, previous succession precedents and the laws governing succession in the kingdom.

Mwenda further said Gen Muhoozi informed him that President Yoweri Museveni supports the decision of the Royal Succession Committee.

The President, according to the statement, had sent a team led by a senior Cabinet minister to Fort Portal to engage with stakeholders over the succession question.

After consultations with key stakeholders, the committee was reportedly convinced that there was broad consensus around Kamurasi’s selection.

    Formal Announcement Still Pending

Despite the committee’s decision, Kamurasi has not yet been formally proclaimed king.

Mwenda said the next step is for the Omusuuga to officially communicate the decision to the leaders of the Babiito clan.

He added that he had spoken to Omusuuga Charles Kamurasi, who explained that, according to Tooro custom, the public announcement of the successor is made after the burial of the deceased monarch.

Mwenda said he chose to disclose the committee’s decision now to prevent speculation and misinformation on social media from creating unnecessary confusion around the succession process.

The selection comes as Tooro prepares to lay King Oyo to rest and begin the transition to a new reign following the monarch’s death.

The late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV died on August 26, 2026, bringing to an end a reign that began when he ascended the Tooro throne as a child.

The formal succession and coronation arrangements are expected to be communicated by the kingdom following the burial and completion of the customary rites. Stay tuned!
