The coronation of King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as the new Omukama of Tooro Kingdom will be held on September 29, 2026, the kingdom has confirmed.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, September 15, by Omujwera Musuuga Charles Kamurasi during a press conference held at Karuzika Palace, the official seat of the Tooro monarch in Fort Portal.
Kamurasi confirmed that preparations for the historic ceremony are underway, with the kingdom expected to bring together members of the royal family, Batooro subjects, cultural leaders, government officials and other dignitaries for the coronation.
The announcement comes amid heightened public interest in the leadership and succession of Tooro Kingdom following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV on August 27, 2026.
King Edward Rukidi was subsequently identified as the new Omukama, bringing an end to weeks of uncertainty and competing claims surrounding the succession of the kingdom.
The confirmation of the September 29 coronation date now sets the stage for the formal installation of the new monarch in accordance with Tooro Kingdom’s cultural traditions and procedures.
The coronation is expected to be one of the most significant cultural events in Tooro in recent years, as the kingdom transitions to a new reign following the 31-year tenure of the late Omukama Oyo.
Preparations at Karuzika and across the kingdom are expected to intensify in the coming days as cultural institutions and organising committees work on arrangements for the ceremony.
The event will also provide an opportunity for the Batooro community to formally welcome and celebrate their new king while paying tribute to the legacy of the late Omukama Oyo.
Further details on the programme, invited dignitaries and other arrangements for the September 29 coronation are expected to be communicated by the kingdom as preparations continue.
