A Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 made an emergency return to Mashhad Airport in Iran after the crew detected a tyre failure followed by an engine malfunction shortly after takeoff.
The aircraft was operating a scheduled flight from Mashhad to Kermanshah when part of the tread separated from one of its tyres during the initial climb.
The pilot informed passengers that the aircraft had developed a technical problem before later reporting an engine malfunction. The crew then decided to abandon the flight and return to Mashhad.
Footage shared on social media showed the aircraft experiencing severe shaking as it turned back toward the airport.
The intense vibration reportedly caused several overhead compartments to open, sending passengers’ belongings onto seats and into the aisle. Some passengers were reportedly struck by falling items, while others could be heard shouting and praying as the crew prepared for the emergency landing.
The Boeing 737 eventually landed safely at Mashhad Airport, where emergency services had been placed on standby.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported among the passengers or crew.
Iran’s Civil Aviation Organisation has opened an investigation into the incident to establish what caused the tyre failure and subsequent engine malfunction.
Investigators are also expected to examine the aircraft’s severe vibration and determine whether the tyre problem was connected to the reported engine malfunction. The condition of the cabin fittings and the circumstances that caused the overhead compartments to open will also be examined.
No detailed findings on the cause of the incident had been released at the time of reporting.
