Mirima Lawino Takes Over As New Chairperson Uganda Architects Registration Board

State Minister for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development Hon. Persis Namuganza on Thursday graced the swearing-in ceremony of the new board members of the 13th Architects Registration Board of Uganda (ARB).

ARB regulates and maintains the standard of architecture in Uganda; prescribes & regulates the conduct of architects and promotes training in architectural sciences.

During the event held at the Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala, Minister Namuganza emphasized the crucial role architects play in the development of the country. She stressed the importance of quality infrastructure, including houses and roads, in determining a nation’s progress.

The minister highlighted the collaboration between architects and engineers in ensuring the structural integrity of buildings.

Further, Namuganza expressed concerns about the manipulation of the architectural profession, urging architects not to sit back while their field is exploited. She emphasized the need for architects to work together, advising against unethical practices that compromise the safety of constructions.

“We are going to empower them to make sure that the handful of people, the crooks who are destroying their profession, face consequences,” stated Minister Namuganza. She encouraged architects to cooperate with other bodies and the government to address challenges in the field and contribute to Uganda’s infrastructure development.

The outgoing Chairperson of the Architects Board, Mr. Robert Kigundu, highlighted the responsibilities of the Board, including regulating the practice of architecture in Uganda and ensuring the profession’s ethical standards. Kigundu acknowledged the challenges the Board faces, such as cases of unqualified architects and unethical practices, but commended their efforts in handling disciplinary matters.

The incoming Chairperson, Mirima Lawino, outlined the vision and objectives of the Architect Board. She emphasized the need for architects to collaborate with other stakeholders, including government bodies, to address challenges in the construction industry and contribute to societal transformation.

Minister Namuganza urged the incoming board to continue working towards visibility and collaboration. She emphasized the importance of architects aligning their visions with government agendas and addressing challenges within the profession.
Among the new Board members include; Mirima Lawino, the new Chairperson, and other board members, including Vice Chairperson Jessie Tukacungurwa, Mark Bwambale, Venna Mbabazi Mwinganisa, Abdul Wahab Nyanzi, and Jacklin Namayanja.
