Ugandan Man Sets Guinness World Record For Fastest Chapati Cooking

By Frank Kamuntu

Raymond Kahuma, a popular Ugandan content creator, has made history for the fastest time to make three chapatis.

According to the Guinness World Records, the YouTuber achieved the feat in 3 minutes and 10.22 seconds at a cookout in Nairobi.

An excited Kahuma shared a photo holding his two certificates, detailing how he made the fastest chapatti.

“So, the timer starts the moment I touch the dough. The current world record time to beat is three minutes and fourteen seconds. I rolled the first chapatti, and by 20 seconds, I was done,” he wrote.

After that, he put it on a hot frying pan and tried to give it a round feel with his fingers, which is also required for the Guinness World Record.

As the first chapati was cooking, he rolled the second, and at 54 seconds, he put it on the pan, followed by the third.

“Now that they were all cooked, it was time to fry them in the pan, which I had to do really first to beat this world record,” he continued.

This is the second time Kahuma has achieved a Guinness Book of Records entry, as he set another world record in 2022 for preparing the largest Ugandan rolex.

Kahuma’s Rolex (a popular type of street food in Uganda) weighed 204.6kgs and spanned 2.32 metres.

It consisted of 1,200 eggs, 90kg of vegetables like onions, tomatoes, cabbages, carrots, and peppers, 72 kilograms of flour, and 40kg of cooking oil.

The feat came after a failed attempt in 2020 in which he spent over USh 10 million (KSh 418,500) but could not pull it off.

He finally achieved the feat with the help of a group of chefs and bakers, a process that lasted 14 hours of mixing, kneading, chopping and frying.

On November 19, 2023, Kahuma plunged himself back into the ring with his eyes on setting a new world record for the fastest chapati ever made.

He clarified that the new record was dedicated to Kenya since he wasn’t given the recognition he deserved back home.

He was triggered by President William Ruto’s gifted athlete Faith Kipyegon KSh 5 million and a house worth KSh 6 million for setting worlds for 1500m and 5000m races in Italy and France.

“Really nice to see African governments recognizing these world record holders. Not a single person from @GovUganda @MTWAUganda has ever acknowledged my world record after one year, which hurts,” he wrote on X in June 2023.

With the two records already achieved, he now has plans to attempt a record of preparing the largest Kenyan smocha (a chapati wrapped around a smoked sausage).
