The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s preparations for the 2026 general elections took a political twist today as Prosper Kururagire, the influential NRM chairman for Mbarara District, used a high-level party meeting to openly mobilize support for Nzeire Shadrack Kaguta, the younger brother of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

The strategic meeting, convened at the party headquarters in Kampala to plan for the forthcoming National Delegates Conference, was officially chaired by NRM Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong. While party leaders unveiled the campaign portrait of President Museveni, Kururagire seized the occasion to rally delegates behind Nzeire, who is vying for the powerful position of NRM Vice Chairperson (Western Region) on the Central Executive Committee (CEC).

Kururagire, a prominent businessman and one of Museveni’s most trusted mobilizers in western Uganda, was seen moving with Nzeire from delegate to delegate, appealing for their support. Delegates told Swift News that Kururagire’s influence and reputation as a staunch Museveni loyalist make his word carry significant weight.

“Kururagire is a humble man and a loyal cadre of the party. If he is standing firmly behind Nzeire, then we must also support him,” one district chairperson remarked, adding that they believed Nzeire’s family ties to the President would strengthen the region’s voice in national politics.

Kururagire’s mobilization was described by observers as tactical and calculated. Having been elected unopposed in the recent NRM primaries as Mbarara District chairman, he has consolidated himself as a “money magnet” and a grassroots powerhouse in western Uganda. His endorsement of Nzeire is therefore expected to sway a considerable bloc of delegates.

Delegates also argued that Nzeire, beyond being the President’s brother, has the potential to bridge gaps within the party and channel government development closer to the region’s supporters who feel left out.

“Nzeire is not a bad man. With Kururagire’s backing, we believe he will push for our interests at the highest level of the party,” another delegate said.

As the NRM gears up for its crucial internal elections, Kururagire’s efforts signal a well-coordinated campaign to secure Nzeire’s victory in the western region CEC race. The outcome will not only shape the balance of power within the party but also influence how western Uganda positions itself in the broader political landscape ahead of 2026.
