Finally: Powerful Amongi Fires ‘Crying Baby’ Byarugaba, Appoints New NSSF Boss

By Frank Kamuntu

The Minister of Gender, Labour & Social Development Hon Betty Amongi has sacked the Managing Director of the National Social Security Fund-NSSF Mr Richard Byarugaba.

This follows a long fight that saw Byarugaba accusing his boss (Amongi who’s Appointing Authority) that she once attempted to fraudulently take Ugx6billion out of NSSF while on there other hand Amongi accused Byarugaba of refusing the quit office despite having clocked the retirement age.

Byarugaba’s contract expired at the end of November just after the expiry of his former deputy, Patrick Ayota, who has since been appointed the new MD. It was earlier reported that the Board led by Dr Peter Kimbowa had endorsed Byarugaba’s reappointment for another five-year term but Amongi declined this.

In a statement, issued Friday evening, it clearly revealed that the journey at NSSF is over for Byarugaba.

“We are pleased to inform the NSSF members, stakeholders and the public that the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development Hon Betty Amongi has appointed Mr. Patrick M Ayota the Managing Director of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) for a period of five years effective 18th August 2023”- reads a statement from NSSF.

According to Amongi, at a recent meeting at State House, Museveni said if there were any allegations concerning governance at NSSF, there must be an investigation.

Meanwhile, all these come a few days after Byarugaba dragged Amongi to court for refusing to re-appoint him, a matter court is yet to start hearing.
