Tears: 2 University Students Negotiating Boda Boda Fare Killed By Speeding Pick-Up

By Frank Kamuntu

Two young ladies perished in a terrible accident at Daraja-Moja along the Kisii-Keroka Highway in Kenya on Friday, January 26.

The deceased were coming from the Kisii Ajiry Centre at the Gusii Stadium, where they had attended lessons.

Witnesses at the scene reveal a pickup ferrying building materials failed in its brakes and rammed into them at the spot where they were engaging a boda boda rider.

One of the ladies died on the spot, with the other one dying while on her way to the hospital.

The boda boda rider who sustained severe injuries was admitted to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.

“They were bargaining with a boda boda rider before going to Bobaracho but the driver was trying to negotiate the same bend to Bobaracho, and that is how it rammed into them,” one of the eye-witnesses shared.

Kisii county police commander Charles Keses confirmed the accident.

The locals called on the authorities to refurbish the road as the scene had become a black spot in the recent past.

To console the bereaved was Governor Simba Arati, who hinted at upgrading the road.

“I am deeply saddened to convey my heartfelt sympathy to the families of the victims of the terrible accident that occurred at Kisii Daraja-Moja. May the Lord give strength and comfort to the bereaved families and intervene in occasioning quick recovery for the injured…Sadly, the Daraja- Moja stretch has been a black spot and the upgrade of the highway is long overdue,” he said.

Separately, a family was recently grappling with profound sorrow following the tragic demise of their daughter in a horrible accident at Bilibili along the Webuye Highway.

What was anticipated to be a joyous occasion turned into a moment of mourning when the ill-fated car collided with a lorry travelling in the opposite direction.

The eight-year-old girl was accompanying her Form One sister to Lugulu Girls High School for Form One admission that kicked off on Monday, January 15, before meeting her untimely end.

The car had four people onboard, while the lorry had two occupants during the crash.

Those who sustained injuries were promptly taken to Kimilili Hospital, while the deceased was transported to Kiminini Cottage Hospital Mortuary.

“The eight-year-old girl died on the spot. The survivors in the car and lorry driver were rushed to Kimilili Hospital. We are requesting the government to intervene and help us repair this road,” said an eyewitness, Daniel Manasse from Bilibili.
