Mugisha Haffiizu: Fearless Human Rights Defender Rises To NUP’s Top Leadership In Europe

By Tumusiime Godwin

In a resounding testament to his unwavering dedication to justice and democracy, Mugisha Haffiizu has been elected among the top leaders of Uganda’s formidable opposition party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), Europe Chapter. This momentous announcement, made yesterday, has further solidified Haffiizu’s position as one of the most influential diaspora-based human rights defenders.

According to an official press release dated October 14, 2024, and issued from Stockholm, Sweden, Mugisha Haffiizu will now serve as Deputy Chairperson of the newly constituted NUP EU Chapter Committee.

The full leadership committee now includes:

  • Chairperson: Mr. Robert Kitunzi
  • Deputy Chairperson: Mr. Mugisha Haffiizu
  • Secretary: Ms. Maureen Kitengo
  • Treasurer: Mr. Joe WihaluxNkaso

The committee also appointed Marie Mubeyyi as a key mobilizer alongside:

  • Mr. Kisaco Emmanuel NNungui
  • Mr. Beker Musanje

Advisors to the team include:

  • Jeremy Katatumba
  • Brandon Sekitto
  • Aligo Francis
  • Rebecca Naava

Mugisha Haffiizu’s elevation comes as no surprise to those familiar with his activism. Based in Europe, Haffiizu has earned praise for giving voice to the voiceless back home in Uganda. From street protests to online advocacy campaigns highlighting state-sponsored violence, his leadership has helped keep the plight of ordinary Ugandans on the international agenda.

The committee, now reinvigorated, has pledged to mobilize, register and coordinate NUP supporters across the EU diaspora. “With 2026 around the corner, our main focus is to mobilize and register all change-seeking individuals subscribing to the National Unity Platform Party in the EU Diaspora,” the press statement reads in part.

Observers believe this revamped leadership, backed by passionate figures like Mugisha Haffiizu, Mr. Robert Kitunzi, Ms. Maureen Kitengo and Marie Mubeyyi could be a game-changer in strengthening diaspora influence in Uganda’s democratic transition.
