Dynasty In Uniform! Gen Muhoozi’s Son Joins UPDF, Extending Museveni’s Military Empire

By Our Reporter

In a move that deepens the Museveni family’s long-standing ties with Uganda’s military establishment, the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has officially confirmed that his son, Ruhamya Kainerugaba, has joined the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) at the rank of Private.

Taking to social media on Sunday evening, Gen Muhoozi posted on X (formerly Twitter):

“I’m extremely happy to announce that after 31 years in God’s Army, the UPDF, God has blessed the House of Museveni with another soldier as of last month. Private Ruhamya Kainerugaba, may Almighty God bless him as He did me.”

The announcement has sparked public discussion about the continuation of the Museveni family’s influence in both military and political spheres, with observers noting the symbolic and strategic timing of the enlistment.

A Family Steeped In Military History

Private Ruhamya’s enlistment marks the third generation of the Museveni family to enter the UPDF or its predecessor, the National Resistance Army (NRA), which came to power in 1986 after a five-year guerrilla war led by current President Yoweri Museveni.

  • President Museveni, the founding commander of the NRA, has remained Uganda’s head of state since 1986.
  • His younger brother, Gen Salim Saleh (real name Caleb Akandwanaho), has played a key role in shaping military policy and national defence strategies over the decades.
  • Gen Muhoozi, who joined the UPDF in 1994, received advanced military training in prestigious academies such as the UK’s Sandhurst and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He rose to command Uganda’s elite Special Forces and later served as Commander of Land Forces before being promoted to full General in 2023.

What It Means To Be A Private

In the UPDF hierarchy, the rank of Private is the entry point for all enlisted personnel. It is considered foundational, where soldiers receive core military training, values, and discipline. According to the Ministry of Defence’s current pay structure, a Private earns approximately UGX 606,598.75 per month.

Promotion through the ranks is based on performance, discipline, completion of required courses, and operational needs within the force. While Private Ruhamya starts at the lowest rank, the trajectory of his predecessors suggests a path closely watched by both the military and political class.

Political Undercurrents

The announcement comes amid increased political visibility for Gen Muhoozi, who leads the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a national mobilization movement seen by analysts as a political pressure group with ambitions beyond the barracks.

His son’s entry into the army, some commentators suggest, may be both a personal and strategic statement — reinforcing military tradition within the family while subtly anchoring a narrative of continuity and preparedness for future leadership roles.

As Uganda approaches the 2026 general elections, developments within the First Family — both military and political — are likely to remain under close public scrutiny.
