In a powerful gesture of recognition and remembrance, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has entrusted Buyela Christopher, a vibrant youth leader and celebrated mobiliser, with the distinguished task of nominating President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his sixth presidential term at the upcoming party National Conference.
The decision to assign this symbolic duty to Buyela is seen as a tribute to Bugisu Sub-region’s pivotal role in Uganda’s liberation struggle, especially during the early days of the National Resistance Army (NRA). For many, it is a long-overdue nod to a region that made immense sacrifices for the peace and stability Uganda enjoys today.
Speaking moments after receiving the news, a visibly humbled Buyela shared,
“I didn’t know I was going to be the one to nominate the President. But I am ready and happy. This is a big blessing, and I will do it with pride because I support President Museveni fully.”
Buyela’s selection is not only symbolic—it reflects his growing influence within the NRM, particularly among the youth. He gained national recognition after organizing the first-ever Bugisu Youth Symposium, a landmark event personally attended by President Museveni. During the gathering, the President pledged to financially empower youth groups in the region through associations and SACCOs. These funds are expected to be disbursed by August 2025.
As debates continue over the length of President Museveni’s time in office, Buyela stood firm in defending the democratic process, stating:
“People forget that Uganda has had regular elections every five years since 1996. Ugandans have always chosen their leader, and that is democracy. From Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to Tibuhaburwa, and now Semalungu — the people are still choosing him.”
Bugisu Sub-region, often overlooked in recent political cycles, is now back in the spotlight—not just as a historic ally of the NRA, but as a critical voice shaping the next chapter of Uganda’s leadership. Buyela’s nomination duty has rekindled pride and optimism across Mbale, Manafwa, Bududa, Sironko, and Namisindwa, reminding Ugandans that Bugisu still stands firmly in the heart of the movement.
This moment marks not just a personal achievement for Buyela Christopher, but a resounding celebration of Bugisu’s enduring relevance in Uganda’s political and historical landscape.
