A devastating road accident has claimed the lives of four people and left thirteen others nursing serious injuries after a speeding vehicle veered off the Busia–Tororo Road and plunged into River Malaba.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 6:40 AM at Amungura Bridge, in what police are calling a case of reckless driving and excessive speed.
According to preliminary findings, the driver of a vehicle with registration number UA 889AM was reportedly moving at high speed when he struck a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the road. In the chaos that followed, the driver lost control of the vehicle, rammed into the bridge barrier, and plunged into the river below.
Three passengers died instantly, and the pedestrian also succumbed to injuries at the scene, bringing the death toll to four. The remaining thirteen victims, including the driver, were rushed to Tororo Hospital with varying degrees of injuries. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the hospital mortuary pending postmortem examinations.
The wreckage of the vehicle has since been recovered and towed to Busia Police Station for further inspection as investigations into the precise cause of the crash continue.
Police officials have issued a strong warning to all motorists, emphasizing the dangers of overspeeding and failure to observe pedestrian right of way.
“We continue to urge drivers to respect speed limits, especially near populated or pedestrian-heavy areas. These avoidable incidents are costing lives,” said a police spokesperson at the scene.
This latest incident adds to the growing number of road fatalities reported in the eastern region this year, prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and enhanced road safety awareness among motorists.
