It was with utter disbelief that I watched Godfrey Kiwanda Suubi, barely recovering from a humiliating electoral defeat in Mityana North, shamelessly resurface—this time campaigning for re-election to the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC). The audacity is staggering.
How can a politician, so thoroughly rejected by his own constituents, turn around and request an even more influential role within the party? This isn’t just political tone-deafness—it is a glaring affront to the very electorate that dismissed him. It raises a fundamental question: Does the NRM reward failure, or does it stand for merit and performance?
The CEC is not a dumping ground for failed politicians seeking political rehabilitation. It is the party’s nerve center—charged with defining strategy, overseeing mobilization, and guiding national direction. Anyone vying for a seat at this table must embody electoral credibility and political gravitas. Kiwanda, by all accounts, no longer possesses either.
Some may argue that losing a parliamentary seat is not necessarily disqualifying. But let’s be honest—this was not an ordinary defeat. It was a complete erosion of public trust, a collapse of support from the very community he once claimed to represent. If he cannot even rally the people who know him best, how then can he credibly claim to mobilize the entire Central region?
The NRM must wake up to this moment. The future of our party depends on credible, ground-tested leaders—not recycled figures who have lost touch with the grassroots. Kiwanda’s insistence on remaining in the political limelight after such a rebuke sends the wrong message to the party faithful: that loyalty to the system trumps performance and popular mandate.
It is time for Kiwanda to do the honorable thing. Withdraw from the CEC race. Make way for new energy and untainted credibility. The movement must be led by those who have earned their stripes, not those who feel entitled to positions by virtue of past glories.
The people of Mityana North have spoken. Their verdict should not be ignored. Kiwanda, spare the party further embarrassment—step aside.
