Police in Lusaka have arrested and charged a 26-year-old woman in connection with the attempted murder of retired Brigadier General John Banda, following a late-night altercation that turned violent behind Crossroads Mall in Kabulonga.

The suspect, identified as Abigail Kalyabanyama, of Nyumba Yanga, is accused of shooting Brigadier General Banda twice in the back of the head on the night of July 26, 2025.

According to police, the victim had earlier in the day picked up Ms. Kalyabanyama, described as his female companion, from Nyumba Yanga before the two proceeded to Palabana. While returning later that evening, the pair reportedly got into a heated disagreement.

At around 11:30 p.m., Brigadier General Banda parked his vehicle, registration number AB 1158, at Crossroads Mall and refused to drive further until the matter was resolved. Police say an altercation ensued outside the vehicle, during which the retired officer retrieved his firearm and fired a shot at Ms. Kalyabanyama, narrowly missing her.

In a dramatic turn, the suspect allegedly wrestled the firearm from him and fired two shots into the back of his head, leaving him critically injured.

Responding officers found Brigadier General Banda lying in a pool of blood next to a loaded pistol and empty cartridges. He was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), where his condition is now reported to be stable.
