Business owners in Kasangati Town Council are calling for urgent security interventions following the brutal murder of 51-year-old wholesale shop owner Deo Bwanika along Nangabo Road on Wednesday night.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango, Bwanika was shot dead around 11 pm by unknown assailants who stormed his shop. “Investigations are ongoing. Witness statements have been recorded and the body has been taken to Mulago City Mortuary for post-mortem examination,” Onyango said.
Eyewitnesses described a chilling scene. Joanita Mulungi, who works with Bwanika, recounted how masked men posing as customers attacked them. “Two men came in asking for sugar, and when I told them it was late, they pushed me aside and demanded money from my colleague. Soon, two more men arrived—one armed with a gun and the other with a machete. They ordered us down and then shot our boss as he tried to escape,” Mulungi narrated.
The assailants reportedly looted all cash in the shop, including coins, from a safe and a large bag already containing stolen money—hinting at a possible prior robbery elsewhere. Mulungi has since pleaded for heightened security measures in the area, warning that Kasangati has become increasingly unsafe for business operators.
This murder follows a similar armed attack last month in the Kizingiza zone, where Ronald Akwankwatsa, another shop owner, and his family were terrorized by eight armed gunmen who stole over Shs2.5 million and injured his wife.
Local leaders are demanding action. Robert Bindandi, an area councillor, urged authorities to bolster security along Nangabo Road, citing repeated robberies as a growing threat to the local economy. “Our entrepreneurs have developed this area rapidly, paying taxes and contributing to growth. Yet they remain vulnerable. A police post here is long overdue,” Bindandi said.
Residents and business owners alike are now calling on the government to respond swiftly, fearing that without immediate action, Kasangati may continue to attract armed criminals targeting profitable businesses.
As investigations continue, police have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators of Bwanika’s murder, with no arrests reported yet. Authorities have emphasized that efforts to trace and apprehend the assailants are ongoing.
