As Uganda’s political season gains momentum, one name continues to surface in whispers, speculation, and deliberate blackmail: Michael Nuwagira, popularly known as Toyota, the National Vice Chairperson of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU). Despite his immense contributions to youth empowerment and mentorship, he has increasingly become a target for detractors seeking to exploit his influence. As the saying goes, “When you are on a pedestal, you are bound to attract stones.” It is time for Toyota to take control of the narrative.

For years, Toyota has built a legacy of grooming and mentoring the next generation of leaders. His influence has shaped the political journeys of many young people, including Bukanga County MP Stephen Kangwagye, among others. His endorsement carries significant weight, resonating far beyond Kampala and commanding respect across Uganda.

Toyota’s impact has also been felt outside politics. In December 2024, he donated UGX 20 million to Uganda Christian University to keep needy students in school—a clear demonstration of his commitment to education and empowering the youth through opportunities that can transform lives.

As the Youth elections approach, Toyota’s endorsement is no small matter. Any candidate he throws his weight behind would automatically become the frontrunner, thanks to his credibility and political networks. Mercy Kanyesigye—one of Toyota’s protégées—is a shining example. From her journey in UNSA to the National Youth Council, where she currently serves as Secretary for Legal Affairs, Mercy has consistently championed the rights of the girl child and advocated for gender equality. Now aspiring to become the National Female Youth MP, she represents the new face of youth leadership. Toyota’s open support would not only validate her candidacy but also serve as a strong message about the values the NRM and PLU seek to promote.

Yet Toyota has chosen silence. While silence may at times be golden, in this context it has been costly. Opportunists have seized the vacuum to peddle falsehoods, undermine his reputation, and distort his intentions. This silence has bred unnecessary speculation. At such a critical moment, the youth deserve clarity.

Toyota, like every Ugandan, has the right to support a candidate of his choice. Declaring his position would not only be an exercise of that democratic right but also a bold step in restoring truth and transparency. As the adage goes, “The truth will set you free.” Now is the moment for Toyota to clear the air.

The youth constituency is watching keenly. They are hungry for leaders who embody transparency, courage, and accountability. By openly endorsing Mercy—a candidate with a proven record and genuine passion for youth empowerment—Toyota would be reinforcing the ideals of leadership by example, while also putting an end to the cheap politicking that has clouded his name.

Toyota must step up to the plate. His voice matters. His leadership matters. His decision matters. The ball is in his court, and the time to act is now.
