The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially unveiled the duly nominated candidates for Uganda’s 2025/2026 presidential elections, marking a decisive milestone in the country’s political calendar. Nominations, which commenced on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at the Commission’s headquarters in Lubowa, Wakiso District, have produced eight contenders cleared to battle for the nation’s top seat.
Despite hundreds of hopefuls picking nomination forms, only a handful managed to satisfy the stringent constitutional and statutory requirements. The confirmed candidates include:
• Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Kaguta Museveni – National Resistance Movement (NRM)
• Kasibante Robert – National Peasants Party (NPP)
• Mabirizi Joseph – Conservative Party (CP)
• Nandala Mafabi James Nathan – Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)
• Mugisha Gregory Muntu Oyera – Alliance for National Transformation (ANT)
• Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert – National Unity Platform (NUP)
• Munyagwa Mubarak Sserunga – Common Man’s Party (CMP)
• Bulira Frank Kabinga – Revolutionary People’s Party (RPP)
Justice Simon Byabakama, the EC chairperson, underscored that each aspirant was required to prove citizenship by birth, be a registered voter aged at least 18, and hold a minimum of an A-Level certificate or its equivalent. Candidates also had to present nomination papers, a declaration of consent, proof of education and voter registration, three passport-sized photographs, a certificate of compliance, and evidence of payment of a non-refundable fee of Shs20 million. Additionally, each aspirant needed endorsements from at least 100 registered voters drawn from no fewer than 98 districts—representing two-thirds of the country.
The EC further set tight controls on movement during the nomination exercise. Each candidate was allowed a maximum of 20 escorts and two vehicles, each carrying no more than ten persons including the driver.
Campaigns are scheduled to commence on September 29, 2025.
With eight names now on the ballot, Uganda braces for a high-stakes contest that will determine its next political chapter.
