The Kampala Metropolitan Police have confirmed the arrest of 29 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) following a violent disturbance along the Mityana highway on Monday morning.
According to Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the incident took place at Bujjuko Trading Centre where a group of NUP supporters allegedly blocked the road, disrupted traffic, and caused unrest as they awaited the arrival of their party leader and presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine.
“Today, October 6, 2025, presidential candidate Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert had planned to travel to Mityana District for his presidential rally. Although he was expected to use the Mityana Highway, he opted to take Hoima Road,” Onyango said in an official statement.
He explained that joint security teams had been deployed along the agreed routes to ensure Kyagulanyi’s safe movement and maintain public order. However, chaos erupted when a section of supporters at Bujjuko began drumming, whistling, and blocking vehicles despite several warnings from security personnel.
“The group ignored repeated warnings from our officers. As a result, 29 suspects were arrested and are currently detained at Wakiso Police Division as investigations continue,” Onyango confirmed.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police have since cautioned all presidential candidates and their supporters to comply with campaign route plans and traffic guidelines to avoid unnecessary confrontations with security.
“We appeal to all candidates to follow approved movement plans, respect traffic regulations, and ensure the rights of other road users are not violated,” Onyango added.
The arrests come amid growing tension between security agencies and opposition candidates over campaign routes and rally clearances. On Friday, Bobi Wine was forced to cancel his rallies in Iganga after security blocked his intended route, while similar disagreements have been reported involving FDC’s Nathan Nandala Mafabi.
Police reiterated that while they remain committed to facilitating peaceful campaigns, any actions that disrupt public order or threaten the safety of other road users will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
