Workers’ Member of Parliament Abdulhu Byakatonda has been arraigned before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court on charges of obtaining money by false pretence in connection with a $220,000 property fraud.
Byakatonda was arrested shortly after his nomination for the 2026 General Election and appeared under tight security before Grade One Magistrate Jalia Basajjabalaba as the charges were read to him.
According to the prosecution, while serving as Chairperson of the Divestiture Committee under the Departed Asians Property Custodian Board, Byakatonda allegedly received $220,000 from businessman Asuman Nkambwe in July 2019. He is accused of claiming the money was a commitment fee for the purchase of prime properties located on Martin Road and Rashid Road in Kampala.
Investigators say the transaction never materialized, and Nkambwe later realized the properties in question were not available for sale under the terms presented to him.
The court proceedings drew attention from members of the public and fellow legislators, some of whom expressed shock at the allegations against the legislator known for his advocacy on workers’ rights.
Byakatonda, who appeared composed throughout the session, denied the charges and was later remanded as investigations continue.
The case adds to a growing list of corruption-related investigations involving public officials accused of using their offices for personal gain. Prosecutors said more witnesses are expected to be called when the case resumes.
